{"id":85404,"date":"2020-07-21T16:39:42","date_gmt":"2020-07-21T06:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/?p=85404"},"modified":"2020-07-21T16:39:42","modified_gmt":"2020-07-21T06:39:42","slug":"black-box-data-from-shot-down-ukranian-plane-to-be-examined","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/2020\/07\/black-box-data-from-shot-down-ukranian-plane-to-be-examined\/","title":{"rendered":"Black box data from shot down Ukranian plane to be examined"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_85253\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-85253\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-post-85404 wp-image-85253 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/uia737-1-1024x579.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ 1024w, https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/uia737-1-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/uia737-1-150x85.jpg 150w, https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/uia737-1-768x434.jpg 768w, https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/uia737-1-585x331.jpg 585w, https:\/\/worldofaviation.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/ 1170w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-85253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Commemoration of the victims of UIA Flight 752, held at Kiev International Airport (Wikimedia Commons)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Data recovered from Ukranian International Airlines Flight 752, which was shot down by Iran in January, is now due to begin being analysed by French investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French aviation investigation bureau BEA announced on Monday that it would begin examining black box data from the shot down plane, and analysing recovered voice and flight data from Tuesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The BEA stated that both CVR and FDR data, which consists of both the cockpit sound recorder and the recorder of flight data, had been \u201csuccessfully downloaded\u201d, and stated that analysis is to follow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The French agency was granted permission to be involved in the investigations due to its hand in creating the aircraft\u2019s engines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The investigation organisation noted that further information released in regard to the data will be done so via Iranian authorities, who are leading the investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investigations are also to be observed by authorities from Canada, Sweden, Britain and representatives from UIA, Boeing and Safran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iran only agreed to hand over the recorders to the BEA for analysis in June, after facing pressure from authorities in Canada, Ukraine and France to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What we know so far<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ukranian International Airlines Flight 752 (PS752) was shot down by two IRGC Tor M-1 missiles shortly after takeoff from Imam Khomeini International Airport in Iran\u2019s capital city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The aircraft, a Boeing 737-800, was shot down from the sky just hours after Iran also fired missiles at US bases in Iraq. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The attack on bases known to house US forces was done in retaliation for US President Donald Trump ordering a drone strike against senior Iranian General Qasem Soleimani.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Iran initially wiped its hands of the incident, early investigations by Western intelligence agencies and civilians found that the plane was impacted by surface-to-air missiles launched from within Iran.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Canadian officials wary of Iranian investigation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whilst initially reluctant to do so, Iranian authorities have now admitted that they shot down the Ukranian plane on 8 January after mistaking it for a missile, in the midst of growing tensions between Iran and the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All 176 passengers and crew on board the plane were killed in the incident, which included 57 Canadians. Canadian officials have come forward to express doubt over interim reports into the incident which have been released by Iran.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Canadian Foreign Minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, raised concerns over interim reports released by Iran\u2019s civil aviation authorities, which claim that a misalignment in a radar system, combined with poor communication between the air defence operator and his commanders, were responsible for the downing of the plane.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t put much credibility into that report. It\u2019s not just the result of human error &#8211; I think that would be an oversimplification of what really happened,\u201d Champagne told Reuters on Monday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to understand who the responsible people are, who gave that order, how could the airspace still be open, how were these missiles fired?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, Kathy Fox, chair of Canada\u2019s Transportation Safety Board (TSB), called the data extraction \u201ca big step forward,\u201d however questioned the global rules that govern aircraft accident investigations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current rules state that the authorities within the country in which a crash or accident takes place are responsible for investigations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox argued that these rules \u201cneed to be reviewed and revised\u201d, insinuating that it might not always be appropriate or helpful for a country to investigate the decisions of its own military.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Data recovered from Ukranian International Airlines Flight 752, which was shot down by Iran in January, is now due to begin being analysed by French investigators.
